Followers are accounts that follow a profile. Following are accounts that the profile follows. A follower change and a following change are different events and should be tracked separately.

START WITH YOUR TASK
Find the right next step.
Who follows this profile?
Look for a Followers list or a tracker that clearly reports new followers and unfollowers.
Who does this profile follow?
Look for a Following list and check whether the tool shows the current list, a claimed recency order, or later changes.
What changed during a period?
A scheduled report may summarize follows and unfollows across a reporting window.
The simple difference
Followers are the accounts that subscribe to a profile’s posts and updates. Following is the set of accounts that profile has chosen to follow. The direction is from the perspective of the profile you are viewing.
If Alex follows Sam, Sam appears in Alex’s Following list, while Alex appears in Sam’s Followers list. One action connects the two accounts, but it changes the lists in opposite directions.
What each list can tell you
A current Followers list shows who follows the profile now. A current Following list shows which profiles it follows now. These lists can help answer “who is connected today?” but they do not automatically provide an accurate timeline of when each connection began.
A new follower means an account started following the profile. A new following means the profile started following another account. Unfollows also have two directions: an account may stop following the profile, or the profile may stop following an account. A tracker should name the direction it measures.
How tracker tools use these terms
Third-party tools often place “followers,” “following,” “new follows,” and “unfollowers” on one page. Read the labels carefully. Some products monitor changes in both lists; others show a current list, claim a recent sort, or provide a report over a period.
DolphinRadar’s Recent Follow Tracker, for example, describes saving the current Following list as a baseline and displaying newly detected accounts in later updates. The service says those updates cannot reconstruct earlier history, and first-seen time is not necessarily the exact follow time. RecentSpy describes comparing saved follower and following snapshots between searches.
Snoopreport describes a different product: scheduled reports of public likes, follows, and unfollows. Those reports summarize activity over a weekly or monthly period. They should not be confused with a live Followers or Following list.
Pick the right check for your question
If you want to know who follows a profile now, look for a Followers list. If you want to know which accounts that profile follows now, use the Following list. If you want to identify additions since a specific date, use a tool that saves a baseline and compare later results.
If you want a report about follows and unfollows across a period, check the report schedule and included activity. Confirm whether the service measures accounts gained by the profile, accounts it chose to follow, or both. Product pages sometimes use broad labels, so verify the exact output before paying.
Interpret changes with care
A change in the number of followers does not identify who followed or unfollowed. A change in a Following list does not explain why the profile made that choice. A tracker may also notice an account later than the action occurred, so its first-seen time should not be presented as an exact event time.
The tools covered here describe public-profile features. Account visibility, list size, update frequency, and provider limits can affect what appears. Treat a third-party result as a record produced by that service, and check its method and privacy information before using it.
COMMON QUESTIONS
A few things worth clarifying.
What is the difference between followers and following?
Followers are accounts that follow the profile. Following are accounts the profile follows.
Does a new follower mean the profile followed someone?
No. A new follower is an account that started following the profile. A new following means the profile followed another account.
Can follower counts tell me who followed or unfollowed?
A count change alone does not identify which accounts changed. You need a list comparison or a tracker that reports account-level changes.
Are first-seen times exact follow times?
Not necessarily. DolphinRadar says its displayed time represents when an account was first detected, not the exact time of the follow.
